CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

Tlh; monthly meeting ol* the Council of the Eoxton Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday afternoon, the President (Mr M. E. Perreau) presiding’. A letter was received from the Commissioner of Crown Lands in reply to the Chamber's communication asking that an officer should be sent to Poston to report on land in this district suitable for soldier settlement, advising that on receipt of particulars of any land available the Department would send an officer to make a report. The President reported that he had interviewed a number of business men on the question of the appointment of a night-watchman, and all those approached bad agreed to contribute towards the cost of employing a man. A meeting of all interested in the scheme would be convened at an early date. Several letters giving information as to suitable fire-fighting appliances for Eoxton were read, and it was denuded to forward the information in hand to the Borough Council.

The question of the most suitable form which the soldiers' memorial should lake was discussed, and it was decided to make a recommendation to the public meeting to he held this evening that it should take the form of a hand rotunda to be erected in the Easton Park. Messrs Perreau and Hornblow were appointed to represent the Chamber at the conference of delegates to be held in Palmerston N. on Thursday afternoon to discuss the advisability of the formation, of a. Progress League for the M ellington Provincial District. A letter was read from the Manawatu County Council in reply to the Chamber’s request that goatsrue should be declared a noxious weed, declining to act as suggested, and pointing out that in the County Council’s' opinion it was not advisable to do so until steps were taken to deal with this weed at its source. — In the discussion that followed it was mentioned that goatsrue had alreadv been declared a noxious weed by the Woodviile, Kairanga and Horowhenua Counties. It was decided to communicate with the Commissioner of Crown Lands, urging that steps be immediately taken to clear Crown Lands in the neighbourhood of the Manawatu Gorge of goatsrue, and to ask the-Manawatu County Council to co-operate in this matter.
