FREIGHT ON HEMP.
Furtlior inquiry was made in the House on Tuesday by Mr W. H. Field to ascertain if the Government had been able to secure a reduction in (lie freight on flax and tow, as the quadrupling of the charges had caused the mills to close, threatening bankruptcy to owners, and causing (lax to be wasted. He also wished to know if the Government had been offered a loan in Loudon to purchase overseas trading steamers. Air Massy expressed regret at the high freights ruling. He had made many efforts to gel a reduction, approaching the Imperial authorities on the matter, but, owing to the scarcity of ships, he had failed. If freights were cut down it might cause a scarcity of ships. Mr Field: Can you get German
shifts ; Mr Massey: We have some! Mir 1 bade: And they loaded in Sydney!
