FORTY YEARS AGO.
■t (From “The Manawktu Herald,” October 28th,/1879.) , ■ . ' Timber for England.—We notice with very great pleasure that a trial shipment of Manawatu timber is to be forwarded to the'home market. A number of huge caulks of totara, rimu, matai, honeysuckle, etc., numbered, and with iljie measurement marked upon them,,,have been lying for some days in the. railway yards. A portion was , shipped per Stormbird on Saturday, tynd the Jane Douglas will probably take the remainder. The firm df Malcolm and Co. are the shippers,\ and we hear the total quantity intended to be forwarded is about 35,000 feet. Of
course, the only use the timber is likely to be required for at Home is to make up into, furniture. A profitable trade may he created in that line, as New Zealand woods have a reputation fox* the. handsome manner in which they turn out under the hands of a skilful cabinetmaker and polishex-. Should the shipment about to be forwarded turn out a success, we hope to see a large and increasing tx’adc done between Manawatu and the Home Country. We shall watch with interest the x’esult of the experiment.
