BOWLING.

The first match this season for the Dixon Cup was played on the Manawatu green on Saturday, between Manawatu (holders) and Foxton (challengers). Prior to the commencement of the game the President of the Manawatu Club (Mr C. F. Spooner) referred In the sad and untimely death of Mrs Dixon, wife of the donor of the cup, which had taken place suddenly the previous afternoon. Mr Spooner said that both teams had considered in view of the circumstances, whether the match should not be postponed, but it was fell that Mr Dixon would not wish this to he done, and it was therefore decided to play the match. A motion of sympathy with Mr Dixon in the great loss he has sustained was passed, and the players taking part in the challenge match sent a wreath. The holders played a particularly fine game throughout, find after the first few heads led their opponents right through the match. The challengers played much below ‘ form. The official opening of the Levin green took place yesterday afternoon, under ideal weather conditions. The Foxton Club was represented by four rinks, and a team was also present from Shannon. Mr N. C. Holdaway, president of the Club, extended a cordial welcome to the visitors, and Mrs Holdaway plaved the first bowl. f lho players and spectators were entertained at afternoon tea by Mrs Holdaway, and the visitors were also provided with refreshments* prior to leaving the green. At. the conclusion of the play Dr. Mandl, m behalf of the visitors, thanked the Levin Club for Hie very hospitable manner in which they bad been treated. He advocated a-system of visitations, bet ween the Shannon, laivin and Foxton clubs, which wore so bamlu, to each other, which would be the means of creating greater interest among members. On his call, hearty cheers were given for the Levin howlers and ladies. Cheers for the visitors by the home players eoneluded a most enjoyable afternoon.
