EARTHQUAKE AT FIJI.
Auckland, Oct. 18,
Further news of the earthquake at Fiji received by mail states that the Island of Raid, owned by Levers’ Plantations, Ltd., suffered severely on the same night, 3rd October. The residents were awakened by booms like thunder, followed by the wild heaving of the earth. Houses swayed alarmingly, furniture turned somersaults, and crockery was smashed to hits. The Indians were panic-stricken, and, fearing a tidal wave, wildly rushed up the hill. A large drier for preparing copra caught tire, and disappeared into smoking debris. On examination,' cracks were found everywhere. A large crack at the Indian lines was spouting mud and yellow slime, and a number of geysers aJong the beach were throwing up mud. Large portions of Mount Dawson, the highest peak on the island, were thrown, or blown off. Rocks had been split or smashed, and many great masses as large as houses had ploughed down from the hills to the coast Hats, leaving lanes of crushed trees and bushes.
