BOWLING.
The local howling green presented a very animated appearanee yesterday afternoon, when the official opening of the bowling season in Foxton took place. For some days past a number of enthusiastic bowlers had been hard at work getting the green into order, and from an early hour yesterday morning a “working bee’ was busily engaged, with the result that when play commenced in the afternoon the green
was in real first-class order, being smooth, With a good draw on either hand, and reasonably fast for this time of" the year. The visiting bowlers expressed themselves as highly pleased with the green provided for them, and many congratulatory remarks were heard from all quarters on the improvements that had been carried out since the (dosing of last season. The verandah on the pavilion was occupied all the afternoon by spectators, and the new rustic summerhouse was also in much demand. The popularity of the local club with bowlers through-, out the district was evidenced by the large number of visitors present, representatives being present from the following clubs: —Levin, Olaki, Shannon, Palmerston North, Ivelliurh, Fcilding, Manawatu, and Terrace End. The President of the Club (Dr. C, L. Mandl), in opening the green, expressed pleasure at seeing so many visitors present, and extended to them a most hearty welcome. lie referred to the goodfellowship that was always connected with bowling, due no doubt to the fact that bowlers generally were good sports, a member of any club being always heartily received on any green he cared to visit. Bowling Clairs bad the reputation of treating visitors well. He expressed the pleasure felt by the bowlers throughout the Dominion that this year, after five seasons during which the cloud of war hung over the world, they were able to officially open- their greens with the nations at peace. Dr. Mandl said that visitors would notice that since last
year some very extensive improvements bad been made to the pavilion and grounds, and in connection wild same the thanks of the (hub were K due to those members who bad assisted in making them. lie specially referred to the work done by Air AV. Nye, who practically singlehanded'had creeled the new verandah. Club members were very "raleful indeed to Air Nye tor what he had done. Air Admoro was also deserving of (hanks tor bis generosity in painting the pavilion free of charge. Dr. Alandl also thanked, on behalf of I be Club, all members who assisted with the other improvements. Tie. then called upon Mrs Alandl to open the green in the timehonoured custom oi throwing the! first jack, and putting up the first bowl, after which lie declared the green open, and expressed (he hope that the visitors would spend a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon. Play was then commenced, the whole playing area being fully occupied, (id bowlers talcing part. Nine visiting rinks wore present, and the 1' oxton Club put in seven rinks, two of the fishing rinks being matched against each other. The players and spectators, totalling in all fully 150, were entertained at afternoon ■ tea by Airs Alandl, who also provided the visitors with refreshments liefore they left for home. Before the visitors left the green, Air Harford (Feilding) on their behalf, thanked the Fox ton Club for the very hospitable manner in which t hey had been treated. Bowlers throughout the district, he said, were always glad iu visit the Foxton green, as the Foxton bowlers wore sneli good sports, and were always prepared to travel and visit other clubs. The ladies also treated their visitors particularly well. He called for three cheers for the ladies, which were very heartily given, Choersby the Foxton bowlers for the visitors brought to a close one of the mOst successful and enjoyable openings
