Mr John M’Kenzie, of Cape Sa'unders (Otago) reports having recently unearthed a moa hone, Avliich he considers to he the largest thigh horn* of a moa yet discovered. ,lt is understood that the length of the hone is 3fl. 3in.

Five lenders were received by the Poxton Harhour Board for the lease ofThe Round Rush property of approximately 37(i acres for a -term ot •111 years, and that of Mr P. K. Baldwin* at eleven shillings and four pence per acre has been accepted.

At last night’s Council meeting Mr T. \V. Hunt, contractor for the erection of Whyte’s Hotel, made application for permission to erect scaffolding over footpath in Alain and Whyte. (Streets. —It was decided on the motion of Crs Ale Murray and Thompson, that permission be given to Mr Hunt to erect scaffolding around the new hotel he is erecting in Alain and Whyte Streets; that the scaffolding be boarded or fenced, and that'the water table be planked •in; that Air Hunt take all responsibility "in regard to accidents, and that the whole of the obstruction be properly lighted, and the footpaths to be raptured to the satisfaction of the Council on (he completion of the building. - The School Committee’s application for a rebate of sanitation charges was dealt with a.t last night's Council meeting. The Afayor moved, and Cr Bryant seconded, that half the amount of the sanitation fee on the ten pans used at the State school, amounting to £-1 10s Od, be refunded to the School mittee. Cr. Coley said that the whole of the sanitation fee should he refunded to the Committee, and if it was necessary to treat the Catholic school the same way. “'steal’’ of one shilling per pan was made this year in, the sanitation charge when it was not necessary, and the Council could afford to forego these rates to the school. —The motion was carried.

The Belmont metal used by the Borough Council is a curse to motorists unless well blinded and rolled.

At last night’s Council meeting, Cr Hand.moved, and the Mayor seconded, that Cr Hannah be granted three months’ leave of absence. The Mayor said he did not want to incur the expense of’a by-election. If leave was not tit the present meeting, Cr. Hannah’s seat would become vacant. Cr. MeAlurray asked if there was any chance of Cr. Hannah attending- after the three months had expired. The Mayor said be understood there was. Cr. Hannah’s wife had asked for the leave of absence. Cr. Thompson thought they should pass the motion. It was a matter of courtesy to give u little leave.—The motion was carried.
