FIRE PREVENTION.

At last meeting of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce it was decid - ed to write Mr Bassett,-of Otaki, and make enquiries re the chemical tire engine in use there, and to obtain any oilier information re firefighting appliances adopted there at his suggestion, which might be of use iu assisting a .similar movement in Foxton. Mr Bassett writes in reply: —“In Otaki wo have a chemical engine, hand drawn, and n bucket, brigade, for fire prevention purposes. The chemical engine was procured on the advice of Superintendent Hugo, the Government expert. The engine is only useful at (lie outbreak of a conflagration, or to prevent other buildings from catching fire. IVhfll I suggested for Otaki was sumps along the main thoroughfare and a manual engine, similar to Grey town before the high-pressure water scheme was in vogue, but the authorities turned it down on (he score of expense. For Foxton, with the river so handy, 1 would suggest the erection of a water lower, the water to be pumped up by means of a small petrol or gas. engine, the tanks to be kept full, and on the outbreak of a tire pump direct through mains along the business part of the town, with a bucket brigade to deal with isolated places. If in Foxton at any time, I should be pleased to explain to those interested more fully.”
