HYDRO-ELECTRIC SCHEME.
Mr Nash (Palmerston Forth) asked the Minister of Public W orks whether he would ask Parliament for a sufficient sum of money this session to complete (he whole of the hydro-electric schemes, so that money will be available as required, instead of having to come back each year to Parliament to ask for moneys |o he voted. Sir W. Fraser replied that provision ha- already been made in the Bill now prepared for submission lo the Hoa-e, providing for the necessary money to he raised to complete the Arapuni and Mangahao schemes, and to ct.vend and complete the Horabora and Lake -Coleridge scheme-. The Min-i.-ter, replying to another question, said that progress with the construction works in connection with the Mangahao electric power scheme is as follows About forty men have been employed since April last in the construction of roads. These roads a re'necessary before material for the work's can he taken .in. Provision has been made for the const met ion of the main camps lor I lie construction works. These provided huts and dining and recreation rooms for the men. The railway restrictions have delayed the delivery of some of the material, but it is now coming lo hand. Tenders were called for the installation of a timber mill to cut limber for the works on, the site, but no tenders were received, and the Department is arranging lo carry mil this work itself. Orders have been placed for the ’construction power plan! for urgent delivery, and lenders will be invited this week for the plant, required for the construction of the tunnels, which will be the determining feature in the completion of the works.
