MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The usual monthly meeting of the Manawatu County Council was held at Sanson on Tuesday. 'There were present; Sir J. G. Wilson (chair-' man),' and Crs. W. J. Phillips, W. S. - Penny, W. E. Barber, J. Bryce, H. H. Hunt and 11. G. Hammond. CORRESPONDENCE. From the Railway Department, forwarding paid-in charges for tram , amounting to £36 10s. From the Treasury Department, forwarding £3O for fines collected at the Magistrate's Court for the quarter ending in June. v From the Chief Electrical Engin-
eer, stating that a list of users of power in the County, exclusive of I'Vixtou Borough, showed that 1,917 horse-power would be required. The maximum demand for all these engines at one time would only lie a fraction of that amount.
Prom Mr E. Newman, M.P., stating that he was sparing no elforPto arrange a loan for workmen’s cottages, and that loans would probataA, ly be granted in February. From the Taranaki, Palea, )\anganui, Hull and Horowhenua County Councils, supporting the Council in asking the Government for a subsidy to repair roads damaged by excessive traffic consci|uent on the railway “cut.”
From 3. McKclvie. claiming £5 11s (id for four cases of motor spirit which were lost in transit on the tramway. —It was resolved to pay the amount. A petition was received from 13 y ratepayers, asking the Council to endeavour to obtain a Government ■ . grant towards the cost 'of raising the portion of the main road situated immediately in front of (he Rangiotu Railway Station and Post Oftiee. —The Council decided to do all in its power to get Government assistance for the work, and also enlist the sympathies of Mr W. 11. Field, M.P., in whise electorate the road is. • TRANSFERS. The Council agreed to the following applications for transfer of property: —From C. T. Abbott to R. W. Russell, part lot* 1 section 381, Carnarvon; L. T. Eblinton to W. W. Bremer, part lot I, section 259, Carnarvon; G. Bryce to S, Hutchison, part lot 1, section 320, Carnarvon; A. Brook-Taylor to W. Taltcrsall, lots 10-7, section 208, Moutoa. TRAMWAY MANAGER'S REPORT. The tramway manager reported that, during the past" month the volume of traffic had increased considerably, the chief items' bing; Merchandise 1081 tons, minerals 81-1-tons, cheese 03 tons, timber 11,900 feet, metal 850 cubic, yards; fares amounted to £5 5s sd. A debit balance of £33 10s was shown for Hie month’s workings. On the 18th of September lie .went to Wellington with reference to the Manawatu County Empowering Act Amendment Bill. The Bill came before the Standing 'Committee and received favourable consideration, and was forwarded to the House.. The boiler of locomotive “Manawatu” was expected back from Wellington this week; the engine would be ready to run in about 10 days after receipt of boiler. The main spindle of the shed windmill;had broken, and the mill would require to. be thoroughly overhauled before being erected again. The report was adopted. .
