London, Sept. 27. Obituary: Baroness Codcrstrom (Adelina, Patti )+ the prinm donna.
[Adelina Patti (the Baroness Cederstrom) was one of the world’s great singers, and no soprano acquired'such vocal prestige as Patti in her prime. She was the daughter of Salvatore Patti, a member ■■of a, well-known Sicilian family, and Caterinn Chiesa, an operatic artist, and was born in Madrid in 1843. At the age of twenty-live she married the Marquis de Cans, in 1886 Signor Nicolitii, and in 1899 Baron Cgderslr«m. She went to New York with her parents ns a.child, and was educated there. She made her first appearance on the stage under (he management of her brother-in-law, M. Slrakoscli, at Niblo’s Gardens, New York, at the age of seven, singing the two llorid cavatinas, “Casta Diva” from “Norma,” ami “Una Voce” from “H Barbiero,” afterwards favourite items in' her repertoire. Her real debut was made at the Aeadem.V of Music, New York, in 1859, when she sang sensationally, and wns taken to London. She appeared for the first time at the Koval Italian Opera, Covent Garden, in “La Smimuulmla.’’ in 1862, creating a furore with her brilliant .•dnging and finished aiding. She was equally successful the following year at the Grand Opera in Paris, after which .she enjoyed triumphs in nil the leading cities of the Old World and in America, and was the recipient of decorations and gifts from the heads of Koval Families and Republics.]
