CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
QUARTERLY MEETING.
The quarterly meeting of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce was held last night, Mr M. E. Perreau (pm sident) occupying the chair. ... The president brielly reviewed the work of the Council during the past quarter. One of the chief matters dealt with was the question of the acquisition of a piece of land near the centre of the town as a recreation ground, etc. The secretary (Mr Moorehouse) hu3 brought the matter before the Council, and had suggested an effort being made to acquire an area of about four acres from Mr A. S. Easton. As a result of the move made by the Chamber, the land.hud been vested in the Borough Council, Mr Easton generously making the community a present of same. He was sure everyone appreciated Mr Easton’s generosity very much. The matter of 1 lie formation of a shipping company to purchase a steamer to replace the “Queen of ,I’he South” in (he Foxton-Wellington trade was taken in hand, and as a result of a canvass (he necessary capital was subscribed, and the “Kennedy’ purchased, and this vessel had now taken up the regular running. An effort had been made to get the Manawatu County Council to declare goatsrne a noxious weed, but so far without success. The president also mentioned several smaller matters that had received the Chamber’s attention. In conclusion he said the Council would at all timeji be pleased to receive any suggestions from members, and to give consideration to any scheme having for its object the advancement of the district. A circular letter was received from the Vigilance Committee of the Mangaliao Hydro-Electric League, advising of the work already undertaken in conneclioh with this scheme, and asking for the Chamber’s co-operation in urging upon the authorities the necessity of having same completed as early as possible, —ft was decided !<» communicate with the Minister of- Public Works and the member for the district, urging upon them the importance of having the scheme completed, within the period mentioned by the engineer, four years. A letter urns read from the Wellington.. Central Chamber of Commerce, advising that a deputation to wait on the Prime Minister in connection with various matters of importance to the Wellington Province, and asking the Chamber to appoint a delegate on such deputation. —Mr C. M. Luke was appointed to reoresent the Foxton Chamber.
The Wellington Central Chamber of Commerce suggested the formation of a Wellington Provincial Progress League, and the Chamber decided to advise the Wellington body that in the event of such a League being formed they would be pleased to link up. Mr Christie’s motion, ol which notice Avas given at last meeting: That this Chamber is of the opinion that the lime has arrived when the Government should introduce legislation to provide for a. universal Saturday half-holiday,” was dismissed, and upon being put to the meeting was carried.
The following new members were elected: Messrs D. W. Robertson, S. Mattar, J. Desmond, and W. Ross. 'Mr C. M. Croiiqucst, a member of the Council of the Chamber, tendered Ids resignation, owing to leaving the district, and Mr A. N. Smith wns elected to fill the vacancy.
