THE qnanlily of refined sugar exported from the United State during the live .years since the beginning of the war has been 5,000,0(H),000 lbs., which is two and, a-half limes that of the half-century preceding the war. The sudden demand upon the United Stales which came with the beginning of the war was due to the fact (hat most of (he European countries which bad relied lor (heir sugar upon the beet Holds of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Russia, found their usual supplies cut oil, and were compelled to- (urn to the cane sugar area., in which Cuba and belonging to the United States were the chief available source, and as all these islands have been sending their raw produet to the United Slades for refining, the European countries turned to America for supplies mf the retim'd •ur|ielo. The value'of the exports during Pbe war period was about £58,000,000, as against approximately £2-1,000,000 in (lie 50 years prior to the war. Most of the exportation has been to Europe, hut other parts of the world are gradually turning to the United States as a new source of supply, and the exports of refined sugar in the fiscal year 1918 were made to Argentina, Uruguay, .Mexico, Canada, Africa, Japan, and India.
