WAR GRATUITIES
The adjourned debate on the motion that the paper embodying the Government's proposals in regard to the soldiers’ gratuities and allowances be laid on the table, was resumed in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon and last night. An amendment to refer the proposals back to the Government was defeated by 37 votes to 30, after a lengthy debate. Mr McCombs (Lyttelton) moved a further amendment to the effect that gratuities dale, from the day of enlistment, and be aL the rate of -is a day.
