FORTY YEARS AGO.

(From “'The Manawatu Herald,’ September 23rd, 1879.)

The Pailway Deviation. —We are glad to hear .that another step has been taken "towards the deviation of the railway from the Fox ton Main ‘Street to the wharf, the owners of ' properly required for the proposed work having last week received their respective payments for the land taken. It is (pule possible, therefore, as soon as the inevitable noeontidence motion is decided in the House of Representatives, tenders may be called for the work. We understand the necessary plans and ■ specifications have been ready now for many months. At present not only the general public, but also the railway and wharf officials, are crying out for better accommodation and more room. The large quanti- ■ lies of sleepers, telegraph poles, railway iron, etc., now sfbred in the yard have completely upset, the ordinary arrangements, leading to great inconvenience. The whole of. this will be obviated when the sheds are alongside the wharf. We earnestly hope there will be no unnee-'dj essary delay in carrying out the ’ work, which is a necessity to the convenience and prosperity of the port, and which will also, when completed, largely decrease the working expenses of the railway.
