Manawatu Herald TUESDAY, SEPTEMB. 16, 1919. THREATS OF BOLSHEVISM.

AMERICA will find its strongest defence against the various forms of revolutionary agitation in the real labour of the country and in the “safety clutch” to be supplied by the returning American soldiers, in

•the opinion _ of! Dr. William T. Hornaday, trustee of the Ameriehn Defence Society. Dr. Horitaday has just completed an exhaustive survey of the situation that has been brought about by the surge of radical \mfest, .arid has compiled the results of his investigation in a brochure under the title “The Lying Lure of Bolshevism,” which the American Defence Society is now distributing widely. Efforts of the Bolshevists and other advocates of revolution by force tend to “madness, riot, civil Avar, bloodshed, destruction, and chaos,” declares Dr. Harnaday, who then pays this tribute to the genuine Avorking man of America: “The real labour element of America, the American 'Federation of Labour, has stood like a Bock of Gibraltar against the avuvcs of Socialism, AnarchAy. LW.W.-ism, and ajien Bolshevism that have lashed against its base and vainly endeavoured to undermine it. Samuel Gompers, its president, has set his face like adamant against the forces that have endeavoured to cajole, to threaten, and finally to force him and the federation into the ranks of the revolutionists and eivil-War makers. Nor is this surprising. The veal American Avorker —not the shirker, the saboteur, and the Jaw -smith —has more Intelli-

gence, more reasoning power, more real sense, more money in the bank, and more real estate than the worker of any other nation under the sun.’ He knows Avhen to stand up and strike fur his rights, but he has a million times too nmeh sense to dream of such insane folly as trying to ‘seize’ (he factory and man it himself, without either capital, credit, or business experience. He knoAvs dial capita! is just as necessary to’ labour as labour is to capital; and that both are entitled to a square deal and their God-given rights. Where his housing and his conditions are not right they should be made rigid; but ho also knoAvs that in the congested districts of the great cities no power on earth can provide a roomy and comfortable home for every alien who chooses to jam himself in and live whore there is no room for him, instead of seeking more room elsewhere.” Of the common-sense patriotism of the men of the A.E.F., Dr. Hornaday says: “The loyal people of America can rest assured (had in any and every clash with Bolshevism in America'the returned American soldiers and marines will lie found on the American side. The man who Avent over to the trenches (o risk all for the (lag will not lag or be at ail modest in defending it. against anarchists. Those must entertain no illusions regarding (he beauty and desirability of rough-necked ‘proletariat’ .SoA’iet goA’ernment. Wo are nut at. all afraid of (be final result of a clash at arms with the Bolshe-vik-Socialists; but unnecessary Avar and bloodshed can and should' b? prevented by civil anthonlies. Wo have had one civil Avar, and that is enough. It is our duty to strangle the cobras of BolshcA'ism before they strike.”
