Manawatu Herald THURSDAY, SEPTEMB. 11, 1919. A GENEROUS GIFT.
THE Ihftnks of the community arc duo to Mr A. S. Easton for his generous gift of upwards of four acres of land in (lie centre of the borough, as' a thanks-offering and to commemorate the signing of Peace, and which is to he converted into a beauty spot. We believe this is the first gift of its nature to the borough by any resident, and Mr Easton's splendid generosity may inspire others to contribute in cash or kind to make* 1 lie locality a place of beauty and a delight to the residents, The Mayor has signified his intention of setting up a Beautifying Society, whose object no doubt will be to arouse and stimulate public interest in the reserves, to raise funds for beautifying and improving them,' and to co-operate with the Borough Reserves Committee generally. Upwards of £I,OOO will be required to complete a comprehensive beautifying plan in connection with this gift, and this, spread over a period of live years, should not lie a financial burden on the community, while (lie general upkeep will be provided out of Ibe Reserves Fund. Possibly something' also could be done by the Beautifying Society, when formed, to improve 'Victoria Park, which could he utilis - ed for athletic pastimes. We hope the Council will associate Mr Easton’s name with the ground he has cledicated for the pleasure of posterity.
