RATES OF CONSUMPTION. ARTICLES OF COMMON. USE. The annual return showing rates of consumption of articles in ebmnion use, as laid before Parliament,reveals reduced consumption' of .spirits, wine, and beer last .year. The decrease in the case of spirits, due presumably to the increased retail price, is substantial. The following figures show the total consumption and the rates per head for the last live years:— SPIRITS.

The consumption per head, in the case of spirits, is calculated on the adult male population, which shrank from 349,591 in 1914 to 310,1(13 in 1918. The adult male and female populalion is used in the ease of wine, imported hjeer, and Xew Zealand beer. It was 774,837 in 1914, and 757,824 in 1918.

TOBACCO

The consumption per head of tobacco, calculated on the adult male population, .shows a continued per-centage-increase, though the actual quauitiy used ijj<less than in 1914. The figures are as follow: —

The consumption of ten in 1018 wus 9,403,20/ lbs., e/ptal to 8.10 lbs. per bend of the lolnl population, as against 7.03 lbs. in 1017, and 0.04 lbs., in 1010. The consumption of sugar amounted to 108,508,432 lbs. in 1018, or 04,2 lbs. per bead, as againsl 121.21 b. per bead in 1017.

The duty collected on ad valorem goods in 1918 was at the rate of £1 12s 3ld in 1916. The ad valorem duties collected in 1.913 amounted to £1 7s (id per bead, the highest recoi’ded up to that time.
