(From “The Manawatu Herald’’’ -September 2nd. 187!).)

The Manawatu Bar.—As several remarks have been made laiply in disparagement of the Manawatu port, owing to the liar at the mouth of Hie river, Captain Baseand, of the p.s. Sampson, authorises us to slate that he has at all times found the bar to be good and easily worked. On Saturday last the Sampson crossed two hours before high tide, and found eight feet of water on the bar. , Post on Harbour Board. —An emergency meeting of the Board was held on Saturday last. Present:— Messrs Gray (chairman), Thynne, Cook, London and Russell.' The Chairman read a copy of letter forwarded to the Government re wharf accommodation. A discussion took place regarding the necessity of asking Government for an endowment. The general opinion was that - before any such request was made a survey of the river, with a view to improvements -required, should lie made. “Upon the mol ion of Mr Cook a resolution was passed asking the Government to instruct one of their engineers to confer with the Board with a view to a survey of the river being made as a basis on which to apply for an endowment. A resolution was passed on the motion of Mr Russell, bringing before the Government the vexations nature of the wharf charges, especially upon timber, and asking the Government so to'alter the wharf that Fox ton t raders could deposit their goods for export at the vessel’s side, and receive their imports there, instead of at the' railway sheds; the resolution further asked that the wharf accommodation might be so increased that timber could be stacked near for shipment.
