FORTY YEARS AGO.
(From the “Manawatu Herald,” September 2nd,"’ 1879.) Foxton Local Board. —The nomination of ratepayers to sit as Commissioners of the. FoJfion Local Board took place yesterday at the Courthouse, at noon. Mr E. S. Thynne acted as Returning Officer, and having explained the law regarding the nomination., of candidates, called on the ratepayers present to nominate those persons they considered suitable. The following gentlemen were nominated; —A, Gray, proposed by A. J. Whyte, seconded by G. Russell; Francis Loudon, proposed by N. Bartlett, 'seconded by W. Reeve; N. Bartlett, J. A. Perreau, T. Easton, and Jas. Coley, proposed by F. Loudon, seconded by \Y. Reeve; A. J, Whyte, proposed by G. Russell, seconded by H. L. McFadyen; T. U. Cook, proposed by F. Loudon, 1/ut declined to stand; J. Purcell, proposed by F. Loudon, but declined to stand, saying he had told Mr Loudon a moment before “he wasn’t mad.’ 1 Upon a show of hands, the following votes were taken; —T. Easton 18, F. Loudon 12, J. Coley 11, A. J. Whyte 9, A. Gray 8, N. Bartlett 8, J. A. Perreau 0. Mr Bartlett demanded a poll, which will be taken this day, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.
