The Rev. B. G. Bourchier, of the Hampstead Suburb, speaking at the Easter vestry, referred to the hideous appearance of the clerical dress. He had, he said, not bought a clerical suit for years, and yould not, if he could help it, ever do so. - On one occasion, when a poor curate, he exchanged his suit for two grama phone records, one being “The Honeysuckle and the Bee.” The dress of the clergy created. a barrier between priest and laylnan,. and the time had arrived when the bishops should make such a change as would allow the clergy to be attractive and presentable. The battered wreck of the Sopwith ’plane upon which Hawker and Grieve made their gallant attempt to cross the Atlantic now lies on the roof garden at Selfridge’s. It has been inspected by large crowds of curious people. Little but the body remains. The propeller has been snapped- off short, almost as if the plane had crashed on its nose, the exhaust pipe is bent double, the planes have practically disappeared, and of the fabric most is broken away, that which remains hanging in shreds. A network of wire stays enwraps the machine in hopeless complication, while of the rudder nothing is left but a .skeleton framework.
Speaking at the annual meeting of the Southwark Diocesan and South London Church Fund, Mr William Handover, the treasurer, said that a deaiu’ecently stated that men who were repairing the cathedral were receiving much more than the curates. In his own town the street sweepers were better paid than the curate, and £2OO a year was a poor maxinntm for a man with a university education. A Bill was recently introduced into the House of Commons by Mr C. W. Bowerman, the purpose of which is to remove difficulties experienced in London and other large towns in housing the working classes by making provision for an ample service of trains for workmen to suburbs not more than 20 miles distant. Under the Bill workmen’s tickets will be issued up to 8 a.m. For any distance up to 12 miles the return fare shall not exceed 2d, 10 miles 3d, and 20 miles 4d.
