YOUTHS FLVEU. At yesterday’s sitting of the Magistrate’s Court, live youths, Iteginald Andresen, Lance Andrew, llohert Andrew, James Coley, and John Mathers, were charged with, on August 3rd, stealing fruit to the value of T 3, the property of Chung Wah. They all pleaded guilty. Constable Woods stated that the defendants pulled a board away from a broken window of a fruiterer’s shop, and by means of a piece of wire, hooked out a quantity of fruit, portion of which avus found strewn about the street the folloAV-, ing morning. There were a number of others that had partaken of the fruit so obtained, but the live charged Avere the chief oiler,ders. Captain Gollin, of the Salvation Army, pleaded for clemency on behalf of the boys. They all belonged to respectable-families, and felt their position keenly. He had spoken to the boys, and felt sure that if it Avere possible that they could be dealt with Avithout having a conviction recorded against them, that they Avould not offend again in the future. A club had recently been opened in Foxtou to cater for the moral and social Avelfare of the boys, and if the Magistrate Avould deal leniently Avith them he Avould undertake to look after them. He made the suggestion that the boys should be ordered to report to him weekly. Constable Woods said there Avas a good deal of larrikinism going on in the loavu, and steps would have to be taken to put a stop to at. The Magistrate said he thought the matter avus a little too serious to be dismissed as trivial. Chinamen must ,be protected as well as other people. He said he would have to enter a conviction in each case, and the defendants would be fined 15s each, the value of the fruit", £3, to be paid to the Chinaman out of the fines.
