Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, AUGUST 21, 1919. A NEW BRITISH ENGINE.

GEJ2AT interest lias been excited in the engineering world by an entirely new typq of engine, which was described at a recent meeting of the Society of Arts in London. Sir Charles Parsons, the inventor of the turbine known by his name, who presided, pointed out that most people have noticed the water boiling in the radiator of a motor car, with a consequent waste of heat energy in the form of steam. The engine, invented by Mr AV. J. Still, is a combination of the internal combustion engine and the steam engine. It utilises the heat generally lost from the cylinder and in the exhaust gases to raise steam. The cooling water in the jicket surrounding the cylinder is made to boil, and the steam produced is used not in a separate engine, as has been already attempted, but in the cylinder itself, one stroke being performed by the combustion pressure of the petrol, and the return stroke by the steam. It is claimed on good authority that the Still engine has an efficiency of 40 per cent, on the heat energy of the fuel, as compared with 20 per cent, for the previous best prime mover, and many other advantages. Research on it has been going on for some years, but during the war publication has been withheld. The new prime mover is a triumph of British engineering, and a_ great future is predicted for it by expert opinion.
