He Avould do his best to maintain (hat standard (applause). The Mayor said he was sorry that the balance-sheet had not been returned from the Audit Department, but lie had been in communication with the auditor, and the latter had passed a very h‘no tribute to the work of Mr Wafers. Mr Waters would complete his duties on Wednesday. A resolution in reference to the signing of cheques, etc., was then passed.
Cr. Coley asked leave to introduce a deputation from the Horticultural Society re the letting of the Town Hall, and the Standing Orders were suspended for this purpose.
Mr Patterson, secretary of the local Horticultural Society, said that his society had made application for the use of the Town Hall for September 11th and 12th, for the purpose of holding the annual show. The Town Hall lessee had given verbal consent to hire the hall for the dates mentioned, and the Society had arranged its schedule for same. Subsequently the lessee had informed him that the Hall could only he used for one day. The Hall had been used for two days by the Society ever since it had been erected, and unless this obstacle could be removed it would seriously handicap the Society’s welfare. The Society would like the Council to consider the matter and see whether the two days could be obtained. The Show would be held in about five Aveeks’ time. )
Mr Henderson endorsed the previous speaker’s remarks. He said the Society had in the past been granted the use of the Hall for t\\ r o days.
The Mayor said that under the agreement the Hall could be used on hvo days for purposes other than pictures, and those days Avere Tuesdays and Thursdays. The Council could not commandeer the Hall, but could use the pOAver of persuasion. Legally they had no poAver in the matter, hut at the same time they had sympathy Avith the Society. He suggested that the Toavii Hall Committee wait on the lessee and see whether the extra day could he obtained. This Avas agreed to. 1
As a result of a conference, the lessee has consented to hire the Hall for the second day of the Slioav on payment of half-cost of film hire; This has been agreed to, and the Show will be held as uual.
