INTERESTING TABLE OF EXPORTS AND IMPORTS.
THE following interesting table of the value of New Zealand’s exports and imports shows the growth of the trade of the Dominion in the past CO years. In that period the export trade has increased GO times and the import trade 16 times. This rapid expansion of exports and comparatively slow increase in imports gives the key to the recent prosperity of New Zealand. Sixty years ago New Zealand’s imports were three times the value of her exports. This vicious balance continued, though in less serious proportions, for nearly thirty years, with only one break, in 1871, when the exports exceeded the imports by a million sterling. The depression of the eighties was a natural consequence of this ill-balanced trade. New Zealand was buying more than she sold, and hard times resulted. It was not until 1887 that the balance of trade became permanently healthy, and in the succeeding 32 years the imports have only twice — in 1908 and 1911 —exceeded the exports. In recent years, as will be seen, the balance has been heavily on the side of exports. This is the source of our present prosperity. The statistics are as follows: —
