Ifkor Sikorsky, the Russian aviation expert, who has arrived in New York, announces that he will enter the commercial air Hying industry in the United States, manufacturing the “Sikorsky 28,” which design is an adaptation from the battle-plane type extensively used by the Russians in heavy bombing during the war. A feature of the machine is a promenade deck on the lower wings for the use of adventurous passengers. Stefansson, the Arctic explorer, addressing members of the Canadian Senate and the House of Commons, presented a scheme for converting the Arctic into a great wool, milk, and meat-producing area. The scheme involves the introduction of large herds of reindeer into the Canadian north, and the domestication of herds of musk oxen for the furnishing of these necessaries. Promiscuous dancing under unsupervised conditions is given by the New York Probation and Protective Society as the principal reason why young girls go astray. The society, which cares for wayward girls, has just issued its annual report. . It announces that 3,864 young girls in New York came under the society’s care last yeai’, which is 1,000 more than in the previous year. This increase is attributed to war and emotionalism created by military and naval uniforms.
At the opening of Church Army Hostels in Kensington recently, Colonel Openshaw made a somewhat startling statement. He said that a man who had lost one leg was likely to live longer than if he had not lost it, and if he lost two legs would probably live longer. The heart, he added, had to carry the blood to the extremeties, and, other things being equal, it would continue to y’ork longer if the legs were taken away. He went further, and stated that a man who had lost both his legs could be a better swimmer than before his loss.
