DRAMATIC SPEECH.
BY W. H. HUGHES. London, July 4. A thousand Australian soldiers entertained Air Hughes at luncheon at (lie War Chest Club. They carried him shoulder high, and compelled him to speak. He mounted a table, and was overcome with emotion, froquonlly wiping his eyes. He sa id: — “Australia is now her soldiers’ possession. Only weakness and oowardiec can ever let the hand of the waiting vultures clutch it. “I came to represent Australia, and by God I have done it. There is no way of holding Australia except yours. I am returning To fight those who all my life have been fighting me, and I thank God that I am better fitted for that than anything else. I have not the courage of you, hut if my friends in Australia want fight they’ll have it.” Mr Hughes said that he would remain in the Government only as long as the Government gave the Diggers a square deal, and not a minute longer. “Go back,” he said, “and make yourselves felt. Make your spirit permeate Australia, and work. Nothing hut everybody’s hard work will save Australia.”
