PROFIT SHARING.

A SYSTEM of profit-sharing was instituted a year ago by Messrs Fletcher Brothers, Ltd., builders ami contractors, of Dunedin, ■ Wellington, and Auckland. At a gatli-

ering of the firm’s employees in Dunedin last Friday, Mr James Fletcher announced that this year the directors had set aside £SOO to be distributed among the employees of Dunedin and Wellington. This would serve as a start, and the directors had now made arrangements to introduce new methods into the firm’s business. A meeting would be held with every foreman in the employ at least once in every two months in the various centres, when any suggestions for the improved running of the business, or for the saving of labour and materials, would be fully discussed. In this connection the directors were setting aside a sum of £IOO, which would be awarded in such sums as this committee of foremen decided, for the best idea that any man brought forward for the improved running of the concern. Another suggestion the direc-

tors put forward to the foremen was that at their meetings they should consult as to the men who were considered most suitable for promotion to the position of foremen. Another matter which this committee would handle was complaints of workmen. The directors wished every man to feel that if he had a disagreement with any foreman under whom he was working he had (he right to appeal (o have Ids case hoard, and no man need either leave or be discharged from the firm who was anxious to do his bit; for, in the event of his not being able to pull with any one foreman, having a large number of contracts in hand, it would be ([idle possible to draft that man to another foreman. He fell confident that; by loyal service and co-operation between the firm, and the employees, conditions would not only improve, but that (he differences which arose between them at the present time would all’be swept a wav.
