WAR TROPHIES.
Mr Edward Newman, M.P., has received the following letter from the Minister for Defence. —“War Trophies.—With reference to' your wire of-the 7th instant, re above, I have to advise that trophies captured by units must, in the first place, be handed over to the Imperial authorities. Each unit subsequently submits claims for all articles captured, such claims being dealt with by a special committee, which in due course allots the trophies so captured and claimed. On the formation of Expeditionary Force units, each battalion of infantry was composed of four companies, one company being drawn from each regimental territorial area. Each regiment of mounted rifles was similarly constituted by squadrons drawn from mounted rifle territorial areas. It is, therefore, but natural that the personnel of each unit in the field and their relatives in New Zealand arc concerned that trophies captured by each unit should be distributed in their own territorial areas throughout the Dominion. The principle governing the distribution of war trophies in the Dominion is, therefore, that all trophies captured by the troops are to be, issued in the first place to the (owns in which regimental headquarters are situate. War trophies so issued are not, however, to be considered the exclusive property of (hose towns alone, lint as the property of the regimental area, and the claims of the other towns in the various areas must be considered. Officers commanding units have been instructed to confer with the mayors of the towns in which their regimental headquarters arc situate, requesting them in turn to communicate with the mayors of other towns in (he area with a view to forming a committee to deal with the distribution of the trophies on an equitable basis. Such of (he trophies as are allotted to the fith (Manawatu) Mounted Rides will he issued to the Mayor of Palmerston North, while such of (he trophies as are allocated to (he 7(h (Wellington West Coast) Regiment will he issued to (he Mayor of Wanganui, for distribution in accordance with the principles outlined above. Hunterville is (ho headquarters of ‘C’ Squadron of the rah (Manawatu) Mounted Rides, whilst Marlon is the headquarters of ‘A’ Company 7th (Wellington West Coast) Regiment. These towns are, therefore, entitled to a share of such trophies as may have been captured by the Olh (Manawatu) Squadron of the Wellington Mounted Rides and (he 7th (Wellington West Coast) Companies of the Wellington Infantry Battalions, and I would, therefore, suggest that their claims be placed before the Mayors of Palmerston North and Wanganui' respectively.”
