In 1014 the total merchant tonnage in the world was about 50,000 tons. The war, chiefly through sub-, marine piracy, destroyed 15,000000 tons, and the new shipping constructed amounted to about 11,000000 tons, leaving a shortage of 4,000,000 tons.
