An 18-year-old soldier, Private Thomas William Smith, who was recently discharged from (he arnjy as permanently unfit, lost his father, mother, four brothers, and three sisters in the war. He is the solo surviving member of the family. His father and four brothers were all killed on (he same day—July 15th, 191(1, in (he first advance at the battle of the Somme. His three sisters were all killed in air raids —one at Addiseonibe, Croydon, in 1916, and the others in the East End of London in 1910. His mother was killed in an air raid on the East End of London in 1917. Private Smith enlisted at 13 years, and spent over three years in France,
