A PRISONER’S ILLNESS.

SUFFERING FROM SPINAL ' • MENINGITIS. Napier, Yesterday. When Jack Peat, who was’ arrested in Wellington, charged with I heft, appeared before the Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday last he acted peculiarly, and a medical certificate put in said accused was pretending insanity, and had so done while waiting in gaol. Accused pleaded guilty, and was committed to (he Supremo Court for sentence and removed to gaol. His condition become worse, and he was taken to the hospital, Avhcrc he was set down as a suspected ease of cerebrospinal meningitis. To-day his condition is very low. Peat is a single man, who was employed at, the Ilawkos Gay Club. He had only been in Napier a few months. It is believed he has no relatives in the Dominion. It is alleged that he was preparing to leave the country when arrested in Wellington on a charge of stealing a revolver from the Hawkes Bay Club. It is understood that the man is well connected at Home, and had served in the Avar. DEATH OF, PEAT. ' Later. Peat died at the hospital at noon to-day. It is supposed that he died of corobro-spinal meningitis, but the cause of death Avill not be established until the bacteriological examinations which arc now being made are completed. An inquest Avill be held.
