EDITOR'S EXCESS PROFITS.

An appeal by Mr L. J. Maxse from a judgment of Mr Justice Sankoy, holding him liable to pay £IOOO for excess profits duty on ‘‘profits” arising from flic National Review of June Ist, 101-1, to May 31st, 1915, was heard in the court of appeal in London. Mr Maxse bought the National Review in 1892 for £ISOO, and has been proprietor, editor and publisher ever since. The question in dispute was whether Mr Maxse carried on a trade or whether he followed a profession. His contention was that the profits were professional earnings, whereas the (Solicitor General contended that they were business profits.
