(Own Correspondent.)
A valedictory social was lemlerccl lo Mr and Mrs Kirih ami family in the Moiiloa school on .Friday, the 9th instant. uite a number of friends were present, testifying- to the fact that the “goodwill of a friend” is still a valued possession. The visiting guests were Mr and Mrs Cronquest, of Foxlon, Mr and Mrs Webb, of Shannon, and the usual Moutoa and Marotiri friends. A telegram of apology was received from Mr It. T. Beil, of Palmerston North, consulting manager of Whitaunui, Ltd., who, with Mrs Bell, had arranged to be present. Progressive euchre was indulged in' till 10 |).m., Mrs Hillman securing (he ladies’ prize, and Mr Wehh the gentlemen’s prize. Several ladies and gentlemen contributed songs and recitations, and greatly added lo the evening’s enjoyment. After supper, Mr Cronquest presented to Mr Firth, on behalf of those present, and absent friends, a handsome sit -er watch, suitably engraved, and U\ Mrs Firth a silver-backed mirror and hair-brush, also suitably engraved. Mr Cronquest said it gave him great pleasure to present these gifts, and referred lo Mr .Firth’s long connection with the linn, and (lie excellent manner in which he had carried out his duties. Mr Firth had always been actuated with (he spirit of fair-play, and had treated and directed.those interests tie stood responsible for and the men who worked under him “fairly.” Air Cronquest closed his remarks by wishing Mr and Airs Firth every success in their new venture. Messrs Gallaud, Wehh and Shaw also spoke in eulogistic terms of Miami Airs Firth, and expressed every good wish for their future happiness and prosperity. Ah- Firth returned thanks on behalf of himself and Airs Firth, and assured (hose present that he much appreciated their kind remarks and handsome gifts, and in (hanking them again he
extended to them a warm welcome to their new home in To Puke. Mr Firth said (hey would ever remember that happy evening. Three cheers, “Cor He’s a Jolly Good Fellow,” and “Anhl Lang Sync," terminated a very pleasant evening. The clearing sale held at Whitaunui on Wednesday last by H. Palmer and Co., was very successful, and the contents of a six:roomed house and a number of sundries and live stock was disposed of in record lime, and realised good average prices. Bidding was brisk, and oven spirited at limes. Foxlon, Himatangi, and Shannon wore represented, and I think all Montoa and Marotiri were (here. The beautiful day, no doubt, accounted for many disinterested specialors. Very sincere regret was expressed in this district on Friday when the sad news of the early demise of Mrs Crawley, of Marotiri, became known.
