A good story is told of (he meeting of a civilian and a soldier in a Sydney tram. The civilian said (good-humouredly) : “Hello, Digger,” and the reply came at once: “Hello, Stoker.” During the conversation Avhich ensued the civilian kept turning over in his mind the Avords, “Hello. Stoker," Avondering what they meant. The tram stopped, and, both alighting, (he civilian asked Avhy the soldier had called him “Stoker.” ’“Well,” said the soldier, “in France they call Australian soldiers ‘Diggers,-’ and they call those Avho stopped behind ‘Stokers,’ because they kept the home-fires burning.”
A\i(h reference to the practice of chemists giving medical advice, a suggestion contained in the code of (■tides submitted by the Canterbury Division and generally approved by the Pharmaceutical Conference, was as follows: —“Consulting chemists —counter practice; Pharmacists should not use the title ‘Consulting Chemist/ set up private consulting rooms, visit patients (except in isolated cases and under extraordinary circumstances), use the stethoscope, vaginal or rectal speculum, or give to a patient a certiiieate relating to the state of such patient's health or one indicating that such patient has undergone treatment. The .right of counterpractice so far as it applies to the treatment of minor ailments is recognised. The diagnosis of disease hy pharmacists should not be undertaken/' .
