FOXTON HARBOUR BOARD.
(To (he Editor.) Sir. —.Recently, a deputation from the Pox (on Harbour Board Availed upon the Minister for Marine to place before him the difficulty experienced in obtaining a harbom' master with the .necessary qualifications by such a small Board. Now. Sir, having had six Aveeks’ experience of the Eoxton Harbour Board, I would tike to point out that if is not (he small Board, but the said Board's method of doing business, that will prevent (hem obtaining the services of a suitable man. .Firstly, they offer a salary nearly equal to that of male on a small coastal steamer, and in addition thereto a residence (save the mark!) of six rooms Regarding' the harbour, it could, in my opinion, be made a splendid little 1 port Avith the judicious expenditure of £40,1)00 or £50,000, but the first essential is to elect a progressive Board, and this the Eoxton people have the opportunity of doing this, month, so far as their local representatives are concerned.
The solution of the whole'matter would he for the Government to appoint a Commissioner to administer the affairs of the port, and do away with the present Board. —I am, etc.,
D. 4. WATSOX. Wellington, April .14, 1919. [CERTAIN portions of the above letter have been deleted as, not being conducive to the welfare of the port Ed.H.]
