PICTURES ON GOOD FRIDAY.
PICK MISSION KE F USED. At last: night’s Council meeting T. Powell, lessee of the Town Hall, applied for permission to screen pictures on Good Friday night. If permission was granted a suitable programme would be obtained. Cr, Thompson moved, and Cr. Walker seconded, that permission he not granted. In. speaking to the motion, the mover said lie believed in holding on, to the holidays through Hie Church Ritual. Good Friday and Christmas Day were church holidays, and should he respected. The Ma yor said ho would support the motion.- Good Friday was looked upon as a sacred day by many of our people, and it was not wise to do anything that urns liable to offend any section of the community, Cr. Hannah said if sacred pictures were to be screened and a collection 'taken up he would support the application, but not otherwise. On (he motion being put it was carried, the voting being: For—The Ma yor and CTs. Thompson, Walker, Hannah, Bryant, Kempster and McMurray. Against Crs. Coley, Henderson and Hurley.
