Tlic miiiuiil meeting of 11 1 c> Lady ijivci.)>«>ol Fund recently passed a, grant, believed to he for a substantial amount, to the Kelurned Soldiers' Flub which it is proposed to erect in the city. The grant has, however, been vetoed by the Hon. (1. IV. Bussell, with whom the decision in these matters rests. Explaining his position, the Minister said it had been decided that no money raised on behalf of soldiers must be spent on Soldiers’ Clubs or memorials; The underlying principle in connection with the wav funds was that all the money raised should go directly to benefit the soldiers and (heir dependents. The .Patriotic Societies of New Zealand had £1,700,000 in hand for the benefit of the soldiers, and the Government did not intend it should be allocated for soldiers 1 halls. Soldiers coming hack in broken health, and their dependents, would requira all the money raised. If people wished to establish soldiers’ halls they could ptft their hands in their pockets for the purpose.
