One of the most striking old maps in existence dates from the sixth century. It depicts the heavens held up by pillars placed upon undiscovered parts of the earth, and shows the Creator and the angels busily attending the stars. The bile Czar of Russia was by far the most wealthy of sovereigns, and the only one who kept all crown property in his own hands. His income approached £80,000,000 a year, aml his landed property covered a million square miles. One of the most startling discoveries made by piseatologists iu modern times is that by far the greater number of salmon breed only once, in their lives, and that the number that do so oftener than twice is not more than one in 9,000. To advertise for British trade, firms are to be exhibited in 85 of the principal cities of the world, illustrating leading British industries and manufactures, and to these exhibitions representatives of the principal firms in the'cities visited will lie invited. A herring drifter at Lowestoft, England, secured the record of £lO,240 during the past tishiug season. Another made £O,BOO, and several averaged £B,OOO. Rome fishermen, for three mouths’ work, took from £350 to £4OO, and it lias been a common thing for a lad to take over £IOO for three months.
