ELECTING A MAYOR.

MANLY’S NOVEL METHOD,

A new Mayor, for Manly, Sydney, was elected recently in an unusual ananner. At a meeting of the council called to select the Mayor, Mr Ogilvy sprung a surprise by nominating every alderman in the council but himself. *Mr KeirJe declined nomination, and moved that Mr Ogilvy should lie Mayor.

Mr Quirk said that he had a sporting offer to make. Addressing Messrs Easterbrook. Purves, Dumbrell, Railton, and Read, he said: “None of you chaps has been .Mayor. Go outside, and settle it among yourselves, and I will support the man you select.” The live aldermen retired, but Mr a Dumbrell soon returned.

The other four came back later, and announced that the choice had fallen on Mr Read.

The vote was then taken, and Mr Read defeated Mr Ogilvy by six votes to three.

“A, capifai idea, 1 ’ commented Mr R. D. Meagher, ex-Lord Mayor of Sydney, in discussing the incident. “A. sort of Novice Handicap, I don’t know I hat it would not bo a good scheme to introduce in the City Council.”
