PROGRESSIVE FOXTON.
(To the Editor.) Sir.—l was rather struck with a visitor’s “Impressions of Foxton,” which appeared in the “Herald” of 18th February. It has set me thinking about our possibilities and how they might be' developed ‘by a little well-organised effort. It is the case in' Foxton, as in many other long-established towns, that Joeal authorities lose sight or control of many needs which are not I.bought to be most pressing. They are busy men, and sometimes gel tired of trying to please, so that a gentle reminder or even a well-plac-ed kick has to be given, For such purposes there is no more effective instrument than that of a Progressive League, consisting of residents who have no actual hand in the administration of a town's affairs, '.rids is not a new idea, and is one which works well in small centres like ours. Customs vary in differ-, ent places, but the usual course is for members of the League to lake afternoon tea together once a week. This lasts about an hour, during which the subject set down is freely discussed and resolutions carried. The time is considered well spent, even by the most busy of business men. Why should we not form such a League? There are several points brought to light by “Visitor” which could be dealt with by such it body, and many others of which he seems not to have been aware. It occurs to me to jot down one or two suggestions for subjects that may be made worth attention: — 1. Do we need drainage and water supply? How arc these to be obtained? 2. What steps should lie taken to popularise the Beach as a seaside resort ? 3. Can any further industries be deа, veloped ? 4. Is it worth while to improve the Park, and is it possible to create gardens in other localities? б. Arc we caring for the appearance of the town? 6. What steps should ho taken to inaugurate fire prevention ? 7. The formation of a Workers’ Building Society. I am, etc., * PROGRESS.
