WHO MAY VOTE.

AN IMPORTANT STATEMENT.

An important statement on the subject of right of voting at the Licensing Referendum on 10th April has been made by the Chief Electoral Officer in an official letter to the New Zealand Executive of the chartered clubs.

The executive asked the Chief Electoral Officer “whether those electors who had been removed under authority of Section 7 of the Licensing Amendment Act, 1918, were entitled to vote at the forthcoming Special Licensing Poll.” “I have to advise,” he replies, “thar it is provided by Section 18 of the Legislature Amendment Act, .1914, that at any election any person whose name is removed from any certified copy of the roll supplied lo the Returning Officer in pursuance of Section 24 of the Legislature Amendment: Act, 1910, or who voted at the last preceding election in the district, Iml whoso name docs not appear on the said roll, applies to vole, he shall he given a ballot paper on his making a declaration in the form numbered 2 in the .schedule of the Act.

“This provision applies to the forthcoming Special Licensing;Po!l, and in accordance therewith the following persons may vote: — “(1) Those electors who voted at the last election, under the Legislature Act, 1908, and who still retain their qualifications as electors, and whose names are ruled out of the roll supplied to the Deputy Returning Officers. “(2) Those electors who voted on declaration at the last election as abovo mentioned, and who still retain their qualifications ys electors of the district in which they vote.

“(3) Those electors who joined the Expeditionary Forces, and who voted at any of the several luililary camps under (he Expeditionary Forces Act, 19.14, and have since returned to their district to reside. The only exceptions in (his case are those soldiers who were under 21 years of ago when they joined the Expeditionary Forces and who have not yet attained that age. “(4) Those electors whose names have been removed under the provisions of section 7 of the Licensing Amendment Act, 1918, and are not disqualified from again making application to lie again placed on the roll.”
