The autographs of the British, French, and Italian statesmen who took part in the Allied Conference in London were sold recently for £7OO.
An American patent, has been granted an English inventor for a shoe with detachable soles and heels which can be replaced easily when worn. The total extent of ploughed land (including fruit-growing land) in Ireland, exceeds 3,240,000 acres — an increase of 202,841 acres within 12 months. The Island of Jersey contributed £75,000 towards the war, and Guernsey £IOO,OOO, for which they have been thanked by the British Government. Since the beginning of the war the prices of clothing in Sweden have risen by 250 per cent., those of fuel by 205 per cent,, and those of food by 184 per cent. Companies who intend to run daily London-Paris passenger air services are generally agreed that a salary of about £SOO a year will be a fair remuneration for expert pilots. In farthings, halfpennies, and pennies the children of the Empire sent over £13,000 last year to the Overseas Club and Patriotic League to purchase comforts for the troops. It is proposed to erect at Dover a striking memorial to the many men of the Dover Patrol, and others with local connections, who have lost their lives in the war. The memorial is to be a huge granite gate, surmounted by a Celtic cross, the whole about 80 feet high. Designs in keeping with the object will bo carved on it, and a number of plaques will carry the names of those commemorated. The memorial is to be erected on the cliffs overlooking the Channel.
