MANAWATU COUNTY.

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Manawatu County Council was held on Tuesday. Sir .Tames Wilson was in the chair, and there were also present: Crs. 11. 11. Hunt, 4. Boyce, M. E. Barber, W. S. Penny, W. J. Phillips, and 11. G. Hammond. CORRESPONDENCE. Intimation was received from the Minister for Public Health that the Council’s resolution with regard to the establishment of training nursing schools for girls would receive consideration. A resolution was received from the Tauranga Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, with regard to the sanitation of Maori pas, in which matter they asked the Council’s cooperation in urging upon the Government the desirability of bringing about a much desired improvement. —The letter was received. Notification was received from, the Woodville County. Council that a conference of neighbouring local bodies would be held at Woodville on March 2(51b, to discuss the question of laying down roads in concrete. The Council was asked to send a representative to the conference. —It was decided to take no action in (he matter.

The As.iburton County Council forwarded a resolution with regard to Ihe holding of military (raining camps, in which it slated that it was strongly of opinion that these camps were unnecessary and burdensome to (he community in general, and urging the abolition of the territorial system. —Members 1 agreed with the chairman when he pointed out that the territorial system provided splendid’’Training for the youth of the country, and it was decided that no action be taken in the matter.

The New Zealand Flaxmillers’ Association wrote with reference to goal’s rue, which it asked the Coun-

cil to declare to be a noxious weed. —in the course of a general discussion, it was pointed out that this particular weed was worse than Californian thistle. It was decided not to take any action until further information was obtained relative to the weed and the extent of th« country affected.

The Wanganui Education Board wrote, (hanking the Council for its grant of £2O towards the Feilding Technical School.

dogs. The following alterations were made in Ihe rate rolls on account of transfers of title: —C. A, James to A. B. Taylor, Carnarvon; J. L. Harvey to W. Davey, Carnarvon; R. J. Harper to IV, G. Goebel, Carnarvon; F. Wars Cold lo C. N. J. Levctt, Sandon; H. Wesching lo E. L. B. fiayner, Rongoiea.

The statement of finances showed that there was a debit balance of £3,051 on the general account, and a. credit of £303 on the loan account. The amounts available for expenditure to March 31st were as follows ;—>Sandon £204, Mt. Stewart £438, Waitohi £948, Bongotea £794, Carnarvon £546, Kawa Kawn £lO4, Awahou £242. In his report for the month of February, the engineer (Mr A. (1. Hickford) staled that in the Sandon riding, owing to the dry weather, some of the roads had broken np in places. Mr Smith, of Marofiri, wished to lease the county reserve on the bank of the Manawatu river near Marotiri. Hi had allowed him to occupy the reserve temporarily pending an agreementwith the Council. The engineer drew the Council’s attention to the nee,cssily of providing accommodation for casual labour at Sanson, and he suggested that a portion of the shed at The hack of the County office be (■unveiled into a Iml to meet present requirements, the cost of i\’hieh would he about £39. In his report on the working of the tramway for the month of February, the tramway manager stated that The traffic bad been good, and a credit of £ll6 6s 9d was shown ior the month’s working. The chief items of traffic were: Minerals 921 (ons, merchandise 108 tons, wool 205 bales, timber 22,700 feet, grass seed 199} tons, metal 1,100 enbie yards; fares £3 11s lid. The 20 tons of rails ordered some months .:,y 0 had come to hand. The total cost of the work was £496 2s 3d. once had been taken on in his stead. On the 20th ultimo the locomotive “Rangitikei” was derailed at Pukemu, but no serious damage resulted. TENDERS. The following tenders were accepted : —Cemetery and HalcombeMt. Biggs roads, (500 yards metal, C. H. Petersen, at 7s fid per yard; Rakehou and Tees roads, 450 yards, C. H. Petersen, at 7s Gd per yard; Rongotea-Longburn and Banks’ roads, 300 yards, P. Vaßender, at 10s 3d per yard; Taipo-Awahuri road, 300 yards, P. Vallender, at 10s per yard; Foxton-Shannon road, 200 yards, L. \V. Gibbs, at IGs per yard.
