BOROUGH COUNCIL.
SPECIAL MEETING. A special meeting of the Borough Council was held last night, to settle -the District Elector’s List, discuss peace celebrations, etc. There .were present: The Mayor {Mr -John Chrystall), and Crs. Thompson, Kempster, Henderson, Walker, Bryant and Coley. ■ The District Electors’ List was adopted, to be signed by the Mayor and Crs. Henderson and Bryant. PEACE CELEBRATIONS. The Mayor moved that .025 he devoted to commence a peace celebration fund. He read extracts from "3T statement hy the Minister for Internal Affairs to the effect that sums voted hy Councils and amounts raised hy voluntary subscriptions would he subsidised hy the Government. He suggested that subscriptions should he invited from the public, and if 050 was raised in this manner the total amount available with the Government subsidy would he 0150. Personally he favoured the erection of a permanent memorial stone rather than spending too much on celebrations. Cr. Thompson said he was in our of a much larger sum being voted, especially as the amount was to be subsidised by the Government, lie would like l,u sec two funds established, one for peace celebrations, and ihe other for the erection of a memorial. He didn’t think they would he doing wrong in spending up to £2OO, provided they could see a titling way of spending it. Hu didn’t want to sec 100 much jingoism. Cr. Coley said he thought the Council intended to vole £SO. Cr. Walker thought £25 would be .. sufficient. If they raised £SO from . the public, ilie Government subsidy? would bring the total up to and this should be enough. Cr Coley considered the Council could afford £SO, and if they raised another £SO from the public they would liave £2OO with the Government subsidy. Cr. Henderson: “I am in of £SO; it is little enough for the purpose. Cr. Bryant considered-a vote of £25 was quite sufficient as far as the Council was concerned. The Mayor said that they must remember that the Government subsidies came from the people as a whole, and any amounts voted in this way had to be made up. He didn’t like the idea of blowing 100 much money away in celebrations if it could be more judiciously expended in something’ permanent. Cr Kempster said he would like to see a larger amount voted. They must not expect the public to come to light too much in the way of subscriptions. As an amendment, Cr. Thompson moved, and Cr. Kempster seconded, that a grant of £SO he made. On being put the amendment was carried, the voting being: —For: Crs. Thompson, Kempster, Coley and Henderson, Against: The Mayor and Crs. Walker and Bryant, TARGET RE,SERVE. ft was decided, on the motion of the Mayor, seconded hy Cr. Henderson, that public tenders he invited for the lease of the Target Reserve for a period of 14 years, on thu same conditions as same was offered hy auction.
