Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY,FEBRUARY 22,1919. A BESTIAL COMPARISON.
APART from public Veiitinie.nl re preference tor British goods, and the powers and limitations of the Wanganui Education Board’s jurisdiction in connection with local school committee affairs; also the Gilheitian utterances of well-mean-ing but somewhat hysterical .members at Ihe last Ednealiun Board meeting, (here is one statement by the Chairman which should not lie allowed to pass without comment. Mr Pirani is reported to have said “ho would sooner see fifty thousand indecent pictures in a school than a German piano.” Think for a moment on the comparison—admit enemy manufacture of the instrument, consider Ms purpose as an aid to art and refinement, hear in mind the tax imposed upon it and Avhiel.i found its way into the consolidated fund. Now turn to the “fifty thousand indecent pictures” for. preference! The impressionable minds of (lie children! The comparison is too degrading to entertain. That the Chairman of the Education Board should no far forget himself as to make such a comparison is incomprehensible. We hope Air Pirani has been misreported. If not, we say unreservedly that he is unfitted to occupy any po-* sition in any institution which has for its object .the educational or moral welfare of our little ones.
