OBITUARY.
SIR WILFRID LAURIER. Ottawa, Feb. 17. Sir Wilfrid Laurier, ex-Premier of Canada, is dead, aged 78. • While in the act of dressing for church on Sunday, Sir Wilfrid Laurier fell to the floor, stricken Avilh paralysis, and it Avas evident that he had but a feAv hours to live. Sir Wilfrid Laurier Avas called to the Bar in 1864. In 1871 he entered Parliament, and became Minister of Inland Revenue (1877) and Leader of the Liberal ParKjC (1891). He was Premier of Can (Ida from 1896 to 1911, being the first French Canadian to hold that post, and was then succeeded by Sir Robert Borden Avhcn the Conservative Party came into poAver. Owing to the defeat of Laurier’s reciprocity policy Sir Wilfrid Avas a prominent figure at the Imperial Conferences of ,1907 and 1911. He ' was prominent in 1917 as an opponent of conscription, and in October of that year resigned his leadership of the Liberals.
