MONTHLY AVERTING. The ATanawatu X’ounfy Council met on Tuesday, those present being: Sir James Wilson (chairman), Crs. IV. J. Phillips, W. E. Barber, J. Boyce, IT. G. HanurtJfcd, and 11. IT. Hunt. Leave "of absence was granted to Cr Penny. Inward correspondence was dealt with as follows: — From Railway Department, forwarding report on (ram line. —Received. From Poxlon Harbour Board, stating that £25 7s fid had been placed to the Board’s credit, being half of contributions from tenants to Beach road. —Received. Prom secretary Oroua Downs Sports Committee, asking if the Council will run Irani on .February 2(11 h to reach Oroua Downs at 11 o’clock. —A guarantee will ho required. From IT. E. Sexton, asking the Council lo assist him in purchasing Air N. C. Petersen’s team. —Council, cannot, see its way to purchase team.
From A. George, tram guard, asking (lie Council, to purchase a house and five acres of land for his use. — The clerk was instructed to write several ratepayers in the county, enquiring if I hey are willing lo sell small portions of their properties in order to build county employees’ cottages. From A. Anderson, applying for an increase in salary. —The question of increase in salaries was con■sidered in committee, and on resuming business it was reported that additions had been made to the salaries of (lie clerk, overseer, and assistant clerk.

A similar petition was received from the residents of Kongolea to graze a limited number of slock on, the county roads from sunrise to .'Unset. —d’he Council was unable to grant the request. e GENERAL. The following alterations were made in the rate-roll :—G. T, Woodmo fe to A. P. Easton, W. T. Hool) to G. Colton, E. IE de ■)-. Clere to‘W. Flail. A. Davey to J. Davey, -J. L. Murdock to T. Bowe. The following is a list of metal for mad maintenance for the current year: —Samlon riding, 2,100 yards, £7Bl fits; ML Stewart riding. 2,(K)0 yards, £540; Kongolea riding, 1,220 yards, £705; Waitohi riding, 1,700 yards, £OSB 15s; Kawa Kawa riding, 1,250 yards, tiß7() ss; Carnarvon riding; 1,000 yards, £OBO 2s (id; Awahou riding, 1,000 yards, £OSB 155., The treasurer reported: —County fund account (dr.) £5,120 5s 2d, loan account (cr.) £22!) 7s; not (dr.) balance, £4,700 18s 2d. Accounts available for expenditure to 21st March, 19H), were as follows:—Sandon £3lB 14s lid, ML Stewart £SOB 18s, Wai told £1,029 10s 9d, Kongolea, £853 5s 2d, Carnarvon £t)!)8 18s lOd, Kawa Kawa £2ll tis lid, Awahou £2Bl 17s lid. EXGIXEEK’S REPORT. Mr A. G. Bickford reported; — Kawa Kawa Killing. —The usua.i road mainteuaaee work has been done on the various mads throughout this riding during the last month. The teams are now employed carting metal on the Taikorea and Alain Drain roads. We expect to have a special ballast tram running in a few days, and will then lie in a position to supply m lal lor the Palmcrsfon-Foxlon and Pyke s mads. Awahou Killing.—l have recently planted willows along the. banks ot the Manawaiu Kiver, near the Shannon bridge. About 15 months ago we bad to set back the stopbank close to the main mad, erosion having then taken place, and are now faced with (he same difficulty of setting back the slop-bank, which witHsoon be in the river, tt is quite possible that we will have to make another diversion of (he mad before very long unless the river talers a I urn. General. —As requested, 1 have made up an estimate id widening 140 chains of the Eoxton-Sandon mad, between the Taikorea and Whale sidings. I propose widening the formation 12ft. and put on 10 yards of crushed met al to the chain, and also clay for binding, scarifying, and rolling, at a total cost; of £1,092.
TRAM WA Y MAN AG EH' S REPORT. Mr A. K. Drew reported on tho working of the tramway for the month of December. 1918. and January, 1919, as follows ; —The traffic was good, especially for January, and a credit of £172 7s is shown for the two months. The chief items of traffic were: Merchandise. 205 } tons; minerals, 2301 tons; cheese and butter, 388 tons; sheep, 159 trucks; metal and clay, 1.495 cubic yards; wool, 1,283 bales; timber, 37,500 superficial feet. Fares amounted to £25 2s 9d. A special was run in connection with (he Foxton races, and fares taken for the day were £ls 14s 9d. Great difficulty is being experienced in obtaining supplies of coal. There are only about 12 tons on hand at present. I have a promise of 20 tons at’the beginning of next week, .
