COINCIDING DATES.
ST. MARK’S AND ANZAC DAYS,
The Jaw of coincidence operates in many surprising ways, and often very happily. An instance of I his is to he Annul in (Jie fact dial St. Mark’s Day and Anzae Day are identical in (lie calender. And Iho pnin( in (ids coincidence is (hat the Anglican Cathedral which is to he built on the site of (he present St. Mark's Church in Wellington, will also lie a memorial to the deeds of the New Zealand Army and the battlefields on which (hey Anight. Anzae was the lirst and most heroic of these, and it will naturally he prominently represented in the historic of these, and it will naturally be prominently represented in the historic records which will lie stored in this great cathedral. In view of these (acts the coincidence of the two days is a decidedly happA one. The proposal to build a cathedral in Wellington which would be second to nothing of its kind in Aus- , tralasia, was brought forward over ' a year ago, and in a brief campaign a sum exceeding .CdO.OUU wa- promised, showing that I lie appeal did not fall on deaf ears. At that lime, however, (he claims of patriotic societies and other sohlier.C comforts hinds were being pressed, and in deference to the urgency of these mailers the cathedral fund campaign was held, in abeyance for the' lime being, it is considered, however, that the £150,000 necessary lev begin work on (he main building should be obtained as soon as possible, because one of the purposes of the cathedral is that of a memorial to Aew Zealand’s fallen soldiers. Straightout giving is what is desired in obtaining the money., so that the cathedral will be built by the free-will offerings of a people who are grateful for the success which lias been won by men who fought ami died for right and liberty. There will he no art unions or doubt Ail-devices for raising money. Those who cannot give at onco uhal, (o them, is a large sum ol} money, can promise it and spread the payment of their gift over a period of years. The bon. ing. secretary is the Kev. C. F. kew, the Vicarage, St. Mark’.-.,'Wel-lington, who will he happy at all times to answer inquiries and re-, eeive donations to this worthy ob-. ject.
