FIRE.

DWELLING .DESTROYED. Mr E. Walker's dwelling in Bussell Street was totally destroyed by tire on Saturday night. The outbreak Was first scon at about 9.30 p.m. by Mr E. A. Oxley, who was on Jus way home. The alarm was. immediately given, but by the time assistance arrived the lire had too big a hold to allow of anything being saved. The building, with the whole of the content*, were totally destroyed. Fortunately what little wind there was at the time Was blowing away from the adjoining house, from which a band of willing workers kept the lire from spreading. Mr and Mrs. Walker and family were residing at the seaside at the time. Mr Walker was at the pictures on Saturday night, and at half-time wont to the bouse for some linen, etc., to take to the beach. He entered the building by the front door, and gathered up what be required, using matches for light. There seems no doubt that the lire originated in the linen press, which must have caught lire from the match that was thrown down. Mr Walker is u heavy loser, as in addition to the furniture the whole of their personal effects have been desl roved. The house, which was valued at £7OO, was insured for £6OO, and the, furniture and personal effects, valued at £3OO, were covered to the extent of £l5O. Both insurances are in the Northern Office.
